Comedian John Oliver Buys Debt
Well, somebody was in a giving mood last night. In the biggest television giveaway in history, John Oliver buys 15 million dollars worth of debt.
During his comedy show on HBO, ‘Last Week Tonight,’ John Oliver spent twenty minutes discussing Americas growing industry of debt buyers. These debt buyers buy “delinquent debt” for cheap and threaten debtors to get the cash. While everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting for Oliver to reveal what was so funny about debt, the comedian made a huge announcement. Oliver was buying 14,922,261.76 dollars worth of medical debt for 60,000 dollars. The amount of medical debt Oliver purchased is actually equivalent to 9,000 Americans who are, well were, in debt.
This act of generosity was not only big, but completely trumped Oprah’s “You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!” catchphrase. Oliver clearly has set a new bar for the biggest giveaway in TV history. When asked about the giveaway, Oliver said,”On one hand it’s obviously the right thing to do, but much more importantly [we got to the stage] the largest one-time giveaway in television show history,” Fox News reported.
