Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg refers to Colin Kaepernick’s infamous protest as “dumb” and “disrespectful.”

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick gained fame from his public protest by sitting during the national anthem at an NFL game. While some viewers applauded his protest against police brutality, many considered his actions controversial in demeaning all cops. Nevertheless, many athletes in both the NFL and high school teams adapted Kaepernick’s form of peaceful protest.

However, Ruth Bader Ginsberg recently added her name to those disapproving of Kaepernick’s actions. In a recent comment, she said “I think it’s dumb and disrespectful. I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning. I think it’s a terrible thing to do, but I wouldn’t lock a person up for doing it. I would point out how ridiculous it seems to me to do such an act.”

Still, Ginsberg also added that, despite her feelings, Kaepernick retains his right to act as he wants. “If they want to be stupid, there’s no law that should be preventive. If they want to be arrogant, there’s no law that prevents them from that,” she added. “What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that.”

In light of Kaepernick’s protests against police brutality, Ginsberg also discussed her opinion on the ongoing discussion. “Good minds are grappling with how to deal with it on the community side and on the police side,” Ginsburg said.

As Colin Kaepernick continues to protest during NFL games, the discussion of race relations in the nation continues as well. In the meantime, Kaepernick plans to pledge $100,000 a month to the organizations that best represent his ideals.
