Friday night, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick met with the football team from Castlemont in Oakland, California. During the game, the Castlemont Knights took part in a “die-in” during the national anthem. More specifically, the team laid on their backs as the music played before their game. Kaepernick originally visited the school following the team and coaches kneeling and raising their fists in protest during last week’s game. After the game, Kaepernick spoke with the team personally, thanking them for their support. He said, “I know situations like a lot of y’all might be in where people don’t treat you the same, they don’t give you that time of day, they don’t give you those opportunities to be the best you can be.”

He also commended the team for providing inspiration for other Kaepernick high school protests. In addition, he encouraged them to stand with each other in their protests. “I had to come support y’all because of the same way y’all took a stand, and still with me, I have to come out here and stand with y’all. So I appreciate what y’all did. I love you all. Y’all my brothers. I’m here with you.”

Colin Kaepernick originally made headlines by sitting during the national anthem at an NFL game. Upon further discussion, he revealed that he acted in protest of police brutality in the nation. After his actions went nationwide, other players also took part in protest by sitting or kneeling during the national anthem at games.
