Michael Phelps Transforms

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps transforms into rapper Eminem to perform “Lose Yourself” in a new video for Lip Sync Battle.

In the video, Phelps enters fully in character, preparing to take on Eminem’s style. Following the intro, he takes to the stage to an excited crowd, pumped to see the athlete “perform.” After a perfect rendition, Phelps finishes the song by dropping his mic as an American flag lowers onto the stage. With that song, Phelps clinched the championship belt for the night.

Before this night, Michael Phelps professed his hip-hop love during the Olympics. In interviews, the record-breaking swimmer revealed to listen to Future’s “Stick Talk” to inspire himself. In addition, he cited Eminem and Lil’ Wayne on his pre-swim playlist during training. His love for hip-hop eventually led to Phelps introducing Future at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. There, Phelps stated “One thing that’s been constant through my entire career is the motivation and inspiration that I get from hip-hop.”

On Lip Sync Battle, Michael Phelps also shared the stage with singer John Legend and Terry Crews. Terry Crews performed Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” while John Legend took on “Hey Ya!” with the help of surprise guest Stevie Wonder. Together, the three took on a team of fellow Olympic athletes Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and actress Olivia Munn who favored Sia’s new song “Cheap Thrills.”

Later, Eminem himself found the video of Phelps taking on his song. To the performance, he replied on Twitter “But wait until you see me swim.” Needless to say, the rapper likely approved as Michael Phelps transforms to perform.
